Rosa insists South Africa won the World Cup

Happy New Year to all!

Back after a month-long break, we are pleased to report that our very own Sean Jacobs made it into the opinion pages of The New York Times yesterday (Sunday, 2 January 2011) as part of the ‘Around the World in 12 Months’ feature. (Some of you may recognize some of the ideas from Sean’s ‘Africa is a Country’ blog). My favorite part is his daughter’s memory of the 2010 World Cup. A great piece, and indeed Rosa could be right after all; considering that the World Cup matches were ‘produced’ in South Africa, and that the festival in its totality was conceived and delivered in South Africa … and an atavistic African Sangoma reincarnate in the figure of the late Paul did all the arithmetic, down to the winner.

In my opinion we have to revisit the impact WC 2010 had on SA in about 18 months time. We will be able to ‘measure’ whether the objectives as set out by the LOC has indeed been met. Yes we now have the infrastrucure for other big events but at what cost? Financially and socially, have we achieved our goals?
